The Aurora Police Association is by far the largest representative body for members of the Aurora Police Department,
representing almost 500 sworn personnel from the rank of Captain to the rank of Police Officer. We provide the following:
Service to Our Members
The Aurora Police Association employs a professional office manager and maintains office space to better serve
our members. Accessibility of services to our membership is the highest priority of the APA. The board meets with the membership
during quarterly general meetings, and special meetings are held when required by our by-laws or whenever important issues
dictate.
Collective Bargaining
The Aurora Police Association is the recognized collective bargaining unit for all Aurora Police Officers from the rank
of Police Officer to the rank of Captain, regardless of membership. We negotiate wages, working conditions, leave
time and many other contractual matters that affect the bargaining unit. Members of the Aurora Police Association are directly
involved in ratification of contractual matters and have sole voting authority on these matters.
Legal Defense
Recognizing that involvement in law enforcement presents unique legal concerns,
the Aurora Police Association provides specialized legal defense to all of its members. The APA has an exclusive contract
with Bruno, Colin, Jewell & Lowe, P.C, which is considered the premiere and most
sought after law firm specializing in representing law enforcement officers in Colorado. Through the legal
defense fund, the Aurora Police Association provides legal representation during internal disciplinary matters,
as well as civil and criminal actions that arise from duty-related incidents. We maintain a pager that allows members to obtain
legal assistance at any time of the day or night, any day of the year.
Grievances
The Aurora Police Association handles grievances related to contractual issues, and vigorously defends the contract against
violations. These issues are often resolved by negotiation, but other legal remedies, such as arbitartion, are available and
utilized when necessary.
Working Conditions
The Aurora Police Association Board of Directors meets weekly to discuss issues brought forth by the membership,
and represents the best interests of the members in addressing those issues and resolving them.
Representation
The Aurora Police Association Board of Directors actively participates in meetings with the Aurora City Administration,
the Aurora Police Department Administration, the Aurora Civil Service Commission, the Aurora Key Community Response Team (KCRT),
and many other organizations that have influence or control over issues that affect our membership.
